Guwahati is the junction of national highway 31, 37, 40
and 52. It is the nodal point for road transport in the
region. Beyond Guwahati rail services are limited, making
the road network important.
Assam State Transport Corporation has bus services linking
Guwahati with towns in nearby states. Other state transport
corporations and private operators add to the region's network.
Bus travel is not expensive. Tourist buses are better than
ordinary ones and have overnight services to many towns.

Costs From stand-to-stand,
the taxi to Shillong costs Rs. 625 currently. Sumos are
available from 5 am to 8 pm and the current fares are :
Shillong - Rs. 900 and Bomdila - Rs. 6000 and Itanagar Rs.
4000. These fares are indicative and the actual fares to
these places should be negotiated.
